About Us
The Semaphore Tennis Club offers the opportunity for players at all levels of ability to participate in very enjoyable social tennis. The Club offers 3 attractive hardcourts, a Clubroom, toilet facilities and an enclosed green space for children to have fun while their parents play or enjoy a chat over a cup of tea or coffee. The courts are on the eastern side of the Largs Reserve in Wills St, Largs Bay; the reserve also provides playground equipment for younger children.
History
Colonel James Lovely, born in London in 1844, came to South Australia in 1864. As an outcome of his endeavours, Semaphore was proclaimed as a municipality in December 1883; Colonel Lovely became Mayor of Semaphore in December 1887.
In June 1882, Semaphore Lawn Tennis Club was established on land in Dunn St leased from Colonel Lovely who lived on The Esplanade; members continued to play there until the Club’s relocation to Swan St Semaphore in 1909. The Club then moved to its present site at Wills St Largs Bay in April 1926 on courts built by the Port Adelaide Corporation. The Club has remained at this location since then, grateful for a total court complex upgrade by the Port Adelaide Enfield Council in late 2023.
Since its establishment in 1882, many Club members have undertaken a myriad of roles and tasks to develop, maintain and grow the Club as a welcoming haven for social tennis players across the district.
The Club was renamed “Semaphore Tennis Club” with the agreement of members attending the 2023 AGM.
